Just a short drive from Almaty is the Great Lake Almaty, tucked high in the Tian Shan Mountains.
It's a scenic drive to get there, along winding mountain roads. The lake is 2,511 meters above sea level, has turquoise water and is surrounded by snow-capped mountains. The beautiful color of the lake reflects even the alpine surroundings.
There are several hiking trails around the lake where you can enjoy the view.
Be sure to bring warm clothing with you. Even with 30 degrees in the city, it gets really cold in the mountains. Even if it is only a 30 minute drive apart :)
