There are many jetties in Georgetown, also known as “clan jetties”. They are waterfront communities built by Chinese immigrants over a century ago. Each jetty is named after a Chinese clan or family that settled there, such as the Chew Jetty, Tan Jetty, and Lim Jetty. The wooden piers evolved into tightly-knit residential neighbourhoods, where families have lived for generations. Walking through the jetties, visitors are treated to a glimpse of traditional wooden houses built on stilts above the water, connected by narrow walkways. Some jetties are very touristic but others remain traditional and give you a glimpse in the life of these local communities.
