The 'Turfput' hiking route in Berlare is a beautiful loop trail, in the Donkmeer nature reserve. For 10km, the trail hugs a series of lilly-filled ponds that are the result of the digging for turf in the 18th century. Now, the area is home to a range of bird life and offers many picturesque corners.
Hiking in fall? The peat underground can still get very swampy, so be prepared for muddy shoes!
