Lago di Sorapis, the stunning icy blue lake in the Italian Dolomites is quickly becoming one of the most popular hiking destinations in the region. And it's not hard to see why. Its almost unnatural looking blue color is truly one of kind and pictures can't do it justice.
We parked our car near the B&B Hotel Cortina d'Ampezzo and followed the 215 trail, which was said to be the more accessible one of the two options. Still, this hike is not for the weak. Although it's 'only' 12 km, there are quite some heavy height differences which were a challenge in the summer heat and the trail can get rocky and steep. While the path itself does offer some impressive views, the true reward comes after 2,5-3 hours when you first spot a hint of blue - and maybe also the Rifugio Vandelli.
The most important tip: get there early! Especially during high season. Not only is parking limited, but the trail itself does get quite busy during the day.
