Tucked away in the serene Sagano district of Kyoto, Daikaku-ji is a gem that blends imperial history with a ton of spirituality. What once was an imperial villa for Emperor Saga in the early 800s, transformed into a prominent Shingon Buddhist temple. Walking through Daikaku-ji feels like stepping back in time, literally. It’s a must-do in Kyoto!
The temple complex boasts a series of connected buildings, with wooden walkways that get you anywhere. One of the most famous landmarks here is the Heart Sutra Hall, where you can find a handwritten copy of the Heart Sutra by Emperor Saga himself. But our favorite was the beautiful Osawa Pond that dates back to the 9th century. It’s the oldest surviving example of a Shinden-style garden, and meant to be viewed from a boat for the best experience. Calm waters, surrounded by cherry blossoms in spring and fiery maple leaves in autumn, are exactly what we’d expect to find on a Japanese postcard. Now’s the time to see it with your own eyes!
