A 15,5 km walk in the Leuvenum Forest near Ermelo, The Netherlands.
A walk that follows the longest brook on the Veluwe. It meanders through the Leuvenum forest, in the vicinity of Hulhorst and Ermelo. The location of the forest used to contain sand and heathland and looked like the adjacent Hulshorsterzand. Today, the sand dunes are overgrown with trees and you can walk through the forest.
Park your car at the parking area in Hierden. Just Google "Parkeren Hulshorsterzand - Hierderweg" and you will get there. Follow the path that is marked with green arrows. You'll begin your route on a relatively wide path that will lead you to the sandy plateaus. After 20 minutes, the forest area introduces itself.
In autumn, the meandering stream is surrounded by orange-colored beech trees. In winter, the stream is allowed to step outside its banks, creating photogenic situations. The pictures with the small 'ponds' are actually the hiking paths that were flooded by heavy rainfall.
